Hey guys.
So today I'm going to be reviewing Fast Five.
THE PLOT
This film picks up where the last film left off with
Dom (played by Vin Diesel) headed to prison on a bus.
Within two minutes of the start of the film Brian and Mia (played by Paul Walker and
Jordana Brewster respectively) stage a daring breakout. Then it's off to Brazil.
After escaping, they split up and plan to meet up later. We follow Brian and Mia as they
go to meet Vince (played by Matt Schulze, from the first film) to wait for Dom.
Following their reunion with Dom, the three of them set off on another heist.
The fourth film opened with a similar heist involving a gas truck on a narrow road.
They topped this by stealing cars off of a fast-moving train.
Needless to say, all hell breaks loose in the form of a double cross. The sequence ends
with Dom and Brian driving off a cliff into a quarry., which is pretty epic.
Due to the double cross, Dom is out for revenge. He sets his sights on a very rich crime lord.
At this point we meet Agent Luke Hobbs (played magnificently by Dwayne Johnson) who is
on the hunt for Dom and Brian. A chase across the rooftops of Rio ensues, but the trio manage to escape.
They decide that they need help with this new job so they call in some old friends.
With this, we see the return of some beloved characters from the series, which i will talk more about later..
Completing this job involves new cars, a large vault, and a bunch of twist and turns.
Before the finale, there's a brutal fight between Dom and Luke Hobbs, which ends in a surprising way.
The finale of this film is extremely well thought out, with a twist that you won't expect.
THE CAST
Fast Five sees the return of three of the four central cast members of the series.
Vin Diesel returns as Dominic Toretto, the tough leader of the group, with Paul Walker as former FBI
agent Brian O'Conner, and Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, Dom's younger but equally tough sister.
Michelle Rodriguez does not appear in the film due to her character's offscreen death in the previous film.
Returning from the second film are Roman Pearce, played by Tyrese Gibson, and Tej Parker, played by Ludacris.
Also returning are Vince played by Matt Schulze from the first film, along with Han Seoul-Oh, portrayed by Sung Kang,
who appeared in Tokyo Drift and Fast and Furious. Other supporting cast members include Gal Gabot as Gisele Yashar, and
Puerto Rican singers Tego Calderon and Don Omar as Leo and Santos respectively.
We are also introduced to two major new characters, Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson, and Elena Neves played
by Elsa Pataky. The two play law enforcement officers who set out to bring Dom, Brian, and Mia to justice.
Overall the cast is very strong. Each character stands out in his or her own way.
The three characters who have changed the most in this film are Brian, Dom, and Mia.
Dom started out as the tough criminal, which he still is, but he's also taken over the father figure role to the team.
Brian has gone from cop to FBI agent, and now to criminal throughout the series.
Mia is the character who, I feel, has changed the most. In the first film, she is very hesitant to go along with her brother's plans.
In this film, however, she's is one of the leaders of the heist.
The addition of Dwayne Johnson to the cast was a genius choice in my opinion. With Brian becoming part of Dom's team,
the role of Dom's rival was left empty. Luke Hobbs fills the role perfectly. Dom is a tough guy, so his rival should be equally
tough, which he is.. The fight scene between the two of them is one of the highlights of the film for me.
OVERALL OPINION
Overall, I give this film a positive review, with five out of five stars. It's well written, and well though out. And it has a strong
cast full of unique characters who each bring their own shine to the film.
My only complaint is that this film was not released in 3D. That being said, i didn't mind watching it in 2D, but i feel it would have
benefitted from the 3D as well. As I was watching, my nerd brain was saying, "Oh, that part would look so cool in 3D," but that might just be me..
Other than that, i have no complaints about this film.
